Mini Conversation Heart Cookies will bring smiles to their faces! These bite-sized sugar cookies are a fun Valentine’s Day tradition.
My mom always made cut out sugar cookies with us throughout the year for various holidays. We had so much fun baking and decorating them! Since conversation hearts are my favorite Valentine’s Day candy, I decided to use my sugar cookie recipe to make mini conversation heart cookies!

How To Make Conversation Heart Cookies
Start by beating the butter, shortening, and granulated sugar until light in color and fluffy in texture. This takes about three minutes.
Next, beat in the egg and vanilla extract for about two minutes.
Add the flour, baking soda, and salt to the mixing bowl. Use a fork to give the dry ingredients a little stir to combine them. Then, mix the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients until combined. Cover and refrigerate the cookie dough for at least 1 hour.
Remove the dough from the fridge and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/8″ thick.
Use a mini heart cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes. Transfer them to a parchment-covered baking sheet.
Bake at 400˚F for 4-6 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating them or storing them in an airtight container.
How To Decorate Heart Shaped Cookies
To decorate these mini conversation heart cookies, I used glace icing. You can find my glace icing recipe here. For more icing ideas and recipes, see my Sugar Cookie Icing Guide.
Dip the cookies into the icing and then place them on a wire rack.
If you want to add sprinkles to the hearts, you’ll want to add them immediately after placing them on the wire rack before the icing sets.
You can use a toothpick to pop any tiny bubbles you see in the icing after placing them on the wire rack. The glace icing will smooth out and fill in the space where the popped bubbles were.
Adding A Written Message
Once the icing has hardened, you can use food coloring edible markers to write messages on the icing. Or if that is too time-consuming, skip the words and simply enjoy the decorated sugar cookies as is!
Place the mini conversation heart cookies in small gift boxes so that they are ready to give as gifts for Valentine’s Day.
