Recipe Inspiration
Every autumn, we celebrate fall birthdays with a group of friends by going out to dinner and spending the evening together. This year, we went to a restaurant called Cossetta, which has a huge pasticceria (or pastry shop) in it.
I was amazed by all of the desserts and wanted to try each and every one. We were told that everything is made in their in-house bakery except for a few of the imported Italian chocolates. There were cheesecakes, apple tarts, cannoli, macaroons, pies, cupcakes, and even gelato! Swoon! Since it is apple season, I decided to try making an apple tart on puff pastry.
Apple Tart Ingredients
- Puff Pastry: For the flaky crust.
- Granny Smith Apples: Choose apples that hold their shape when baked.
- Brown Sugar: To sweeten the tart apples.
- Spices: Use apple pie spice as a shortcut. Or combine ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
- Butter: To add moisture and flavor.
How To Make Puff Pastry Apple Tart
Roll the thawed puff pastry out on a floured surface and then press it into a 9-inch tart pan. Trim the excess pastry.
Peel and core the apples. Cut them in half and then cut the halves into thin slices. Coat the sliced apples with brown sugar and apple pie spice.
Staring at the outer edge, arrange the apples in a circle, slightly overlapping the apples.
Dot the top of the tart with small cubes of butter.
Bake at 375˚F for 30-35 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender. Allow the apple tart to cool, and then remove the sides of the tart pan.
Drizzle the puff pastry apple tart with caramel syrup before serving!
Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and take a bite! Enjoy the soft, tart apples, sweet cinnamon, and sugar on a flaky puff pastry crust. Make this apple tart recipe for the holidays and impress your guests with this delicious dessert that looks so pretty.
Frequently Asked
You can use a pie pastry, tart pastry, or even a sugar cookie crust.
I prefer using Granny Smith Apples because they hold up when baked, are often less expensive than other varieties, and the tart flavor pairs well with the sugar topping. You can also use Empire, Pink Lady, and Honeycrisp.
Yes, you can make puff pastry apple tart on a baking sheet. You don’t even have to make it round. When adding the sliced apples, leave an empty border around the edge so that it can puff up while baking.

When you say one sheet of pastry do you mean one paper thin sheet

Hi Nancy,
I used Pepperidge Farms Puff Pastry Sheets. In one package, there are two sheets of puff pastry. I used one of the two sheets for this recipe.
Happy Baking!

Apple tarts look easy (if I dont make my puff pastry myself). Will try them for desert. For the others I will simply have to make a trip to Italy. Beautiful display. Thank you. Trish

ok I think I love you Tonia! I was looking for some mason jar ideas last week for a holiday office party – and upon whose website did I stumble? Yes, your fantastic “cleans up well” jars were a big hit! And now today I’m looking for apple tartlets for a Christmas dinner and again, here you are! I can’t wait to make these – exactly what I was looking to find.
I think from now on I’m going to stop using Google and just start on your page whenever there’s a project that needs to be done! Keep up the good work.
