Honey Glazed Ham Ingredients
To make a honey glazed ham, you’ll need a fully-cooked, bone-in ham and the ingredients for the honey glaze.
- Ham: We bought a regular, bone-in ham and scored it, but you can buy a spiral-cut ham instead if you prefer.
- Honey: The main ingredient in the ham glaze is honey which is where the name comes from. The flavor of the honey intensifies as it caramelizes on the ham.
- Sugar: We added a little brown sugar for additional flavor and caramelization.
- Citrus: Orange juice concentrate thins the glaze and adds a tangy flavor.
- Seasoning: ground mustard, chili powder, and ground cloves.
How To Make A Glaze For Ham
Our sweet, tangy ham glaze recipe is so easy to make! And there’s no need to cook the glaze ahead of time!
- Bowl: Measure all of the honey glaze ingredients and pour them into a bowl.
- Combine: Whisk the ingredients until combined.
- Glaze: Brush the glaze on the ham while it is baking.
How To Put Glaze On A Ham
You’ll brush the glaze on a ham three times while it is baking. The first time is before putting it in the oven, the second time is after removing the foil, and the third is about 20 minutes before it is done cooking.
- Score: Remove the ham from the wrapper and use a knife to score the ham. Scoring the ham will allow the flavors to get further into it, giving it more flavor. If you purchased a spiral-cut ham, you can skip this step.
- Prep Pan: Line the bottom of your roasting pan with a couple of layers of heavy-duty foil to make cleanup easier. Place the ham on the rack and add a cup of water to the roasting pan.
- First Glaze: Brush about half of the glaze over the ham. Set the remaining glaze aside for later.
- Bake Covered: Tent the ham by placing a large piece of foil loosely over the ham securing it to the roasting pan. Bake at 325˚F for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
- Second Glaze: Remove the honey glazed ham from the oven and discard the foil tent. Brush the ham with half of the remaining glaze. Set the rest of the glaze aside for later.
- Bake Uncovered: Then, bake the ham uncovered for 20 minutes.
- Final Glaze: Brush the ham with the remaining glaze and return to the oven for an additional 20 minutes or until it reaches an internal temperature of 140˚F.
Make Ahead and Storage
- Make Ahead: You can prepare the honey glaze recipe ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake the ham.
- Refrigerator: Allow leftover honey glazed ham to cool and then store it in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
- Freezer: If you prefer to freeze the leftovers, store them in an airtight freezer bag or container for 3-4 months.
- Reheating: Allow frozen ham to thaw in the refrigerator. Reheat leftover ham to 165˚F.
