Garlic Mashed Potatoes Ingredients
You only need a few basic ingredients to make the best garlic mashed potatoes! Most of these ingredients are probably already in your kitchen.
- Russet Potatoes: I chose russet potatoes because they are readily available. Another popular choice for making garlic mashed potatoes is Yukon Gold. Both russet and Yukon gold potatoes have a high starch content and are good for mashing.
- Milk: It adds liquid to the mashed potatoes and contributes to the creaminess.
- Butter: Some of the butter is stirred into the potatoes, and the rest is drizzled over the top once they are in a bowl.
- Garlic: We used roasted garlic to make these mashed potatoes. Roasted garlic is milder and provides wonderful flavor. You can use freshly minced garlic or garlic powder if you prefer.
- Seasonings: These garlic mashed potatoes are seasoned with salt, pepper, and thyme.
How To Make Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Making homemade, creamy garlic mashed potatoes is totally achievable for everyone. The most important things to keep in mind are the kind of potatoes you use, not overcooking them, using a ricer, and adding hot milk and butter to make them creamy.
Potatoes: Peel about two pounds of potatoes and cut them into large pieces that are roughly the same size so that they cook evenly.
Cook: Put the potatoes into a large pot. Add enough water to cover them and stir in the salt. Bring the potatoes to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 20-25 minutes until they are fork-tender.
Mash: For the smoothest potatoes, press the cooked potatoes through a ricer! You can also use a potato masher or even a fork.
Stir: Warm the milk and butter in the microwave. Pour it over the riced (or mashed) potatoes. Add the mashed roasted garlic, salt, and pepper and stir until smooth.
Garnish: Spread the garlic mashed potatoes in a dish and top them with melted butter, dried thyme, and pepper.
