Recipe History
We had another gorgeous fall weekend here in Minnesota. On Saturday, the whole family raked leaves in our yard. In the evening, we had an autumn get-together with friends. We visited, carved pumpkins, and ate all sorts of delicious fall treats, from popcorn balls and caramel apples to pumpkin pie and hot apple cider.
Of course, I wanted to bring something fun to share with everyone and decided to make Caramel Apple Truffles. Everyone raved about the truffles, and there weren’t any left to bring home once the evening was over!
Caramel Apple Truffles Ingredients
- Golden Oreos: The main ingredient of the truffle dough.
- Cream Cheese: Helps the truffles hold their shape.
- Apple Butter: Adds flavor and moisture.
- Apple Pie Spice: Add additional flavor.
- Caramel: For a soft, chewy center.
- Almond Bark: Coats the Oreo truffles.
How To Make Caramel Apple Truffles
Finely crush the golden Oreo cookies, remove 1/4 cup, and set it aside for garnish. I used my food processor, but a food chopper or even a rolling pin would work as well.
Add the softened cream cheese, apple butter, and apple pie spice until well combined. This can be done in a food processor or a mixer.
Scoop out about one tablespoon of the mixture, add a caramel, and roll the mixture around the caramel to form a ball.
Place the balls on a pan that is covered with waxed paper. Put the rolled truffles in the freezer for about 15 minutes (or in the fridge for 30 minutes) until firm.
Melt vanilla almond bark or white candy melts in the microwave according to the directions on the package. Use a fork to dip the caramel apple truffles in the almond bark.
Gently tap off the excess almond bark. If the almond bark in the bowl starts to harden, reheat it in the microwave at 10-second intervals.
Use a small, thin knife or a toothpick to carefully push the truffles off of the fork and onto a silicon mat or a piece of parchment paper.
Sprinkle with crushed vanilla sandwich cookies immediately after placing the truffles on the mat, before the almond bark hardens. This will add some texture to the truffles and help to hide any imperfections. You could also try adding sprinkles!
Put the caramel apple truffles in the fridge and allow the almond bark to harden completely.
Make Ahead and Storage
Make Ahead: You can make these truffles ahead of time to bring to a party! Store them in the fridge in an airtight container, and they will soften on the way to the party.
Storage: Store the truffles in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week or in the freezer for up to two months. Thaw frozen Oreo balls in the fridge overnight.
Other Way To Make Them
- Apple Shaped: To make the truffles look like apples, like I did when I made pumpkin Oreo balls, dip them in red candy melts and add a pretzel stick for a stem.
- Without Caramels: You can skip the caramels in the center if you want to. Roll the dough into balls and chill them before you dip them.
- Caramel Pumpkin Truffles: If you prefer pumpkin-flavored desserts, substitute the apple butter with pumpkin puree and the apple pie spice with pumpkin pie spice. Also, since pumpkin puree has a lot of liquid in it, spread it out on several paper towels and then roll it off of the paper towels into a bowl.
Frequently Asked Questions
Although you can use any caramels you want, soft caramels will give you more of a traditional caramel truffle texture. Gently squeeze the caramels through the bag to feel how soft they are. At my local grocery store, Werther’s Soft Caramels were the softest available. You can also make homemade caramels to use in this recipe.
Yes, if you want caramel apple Oreo truffles to hold their shape, you need to chill them until they are firm before you dip them.
Yes, they need to be stored in the fridge since they are made with cream cheese.
No, applesauce would not work in this recipe. If you don’t have any apple butter on hand, you can increase the softened cream cheese to 8 ounces and add more apple pie spice.

I substituted store bought caramel sauce (one third cup) for solid caramel centers, much easier to make, and much easier to insert a sandwich pic through the truffle for dipping into the melted white chocolate. I also used half golden oreos and half oreo cinnamon bun sandwich cookies. Turned out very well. Next time I will add a tsp of green apple extract and maybe some Bailey’s Apple Pie Liqueur. If it gets too runny I will add more oreos.

Truffle seemed mushy and did not have enough apple flavor. Caramel also was not soft enough (homemade soft caramels).
April says
How far in advance can these be made? Thanks!
Tonia says
Hi April,
I wouldn’t make them more than a week in advance. Be sure to store them in a sealed container in the fridge. Best of luck!

Elaine says
I’m sorry, I am not sure what a cream caramel is? I know this is a Musselman’s project, but can you supply a brand name for the caramels so I can figure out what to buy for this recipe?
Tonia says
Hi, Elaine! It’s been more than a year since I posted this recipe, but I believe I used Lancaster Caramel Soft Cremes. Best of luck! ~Tonia
Cheila says
Hello, can I substitute the cookies for a vanilla cake?
Tonia says
Yes, you should be able to do that but I’m not sure about the measurements. Here is a recipe that you could use as a reference: http://www.thecomfortofcooking.com/2013/02/red-velvet-cream-cheese-cake-truffles.html Best of luck! ~Tonia
Elisha says
We don’t have vanilla almond bark in Australia – would it be best just to use white chocolate?
Tonia says
Yes, use whatever you would normally use for dipping. When I melt white chocolate chips, I add one tablespoon of shortening per one cup of chips. Enjoy! ~Tonia
Amy York says
When you crush the cookies do you use the cookie and the middle filling?
Tonia says
Yes, you use both of them (the whole cookie)! Happy Thanksgiving! ~Tonia
Amy says
What kind of caramels do you use? Would regular Kraft ones work, or do they need to be softer?
Tonia says
Hi Anna,
I used Lancaster Soft Cremes. The regular Kraft ones might work, but they are bigger in size and more chewy. Happy Baking!

Abigail says
I was wondering if these have to be in the fridge? If they don’t I was planing on giving these as gifts
Tonia says
Hi Abigail,
Yes, I would store these in the fridge. They will hold up for a few hours outside the fridge, so it depends on how long the gifts would be out of the fridge. Best of luck!
